Fact Check: Senator Casey Has Lowered Costs For Seniors, Protected Social Security And Medicare

PENNSYLVANIA — A super PAC supporting David McCormick is attacking Senator Casey for his record supporting seniors, but the truth is there is no bigger champion in the Senate for seniors. 

As Chair of the Senate Aging Committee, Senator Casey has been a leader in the Senate on lowering costs for seniors, protecting them from scams, and safeguarding Social Security and Medicare from drastic cuts. 

FACT: Senator Casey has lowered costs for seniors, from energy to prescription drugs, while McCormick wants to raise prices. 

  • Sen. Casey fought for a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that lowers drug costs for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.
    • He backed passage of the Inflation Reduction Act which will cap out-of-pocket costs for those on Medicare Part D, and cap the price of insulin at $35/month for those on Medicare.
    • The Inflation Reduction Act will continue to lower costs for seniors enrolled in Medicare by giving Medicare the power to negotiate the price of life-saving drugs that seniors pay billions of dollars to access annually. 
    • He fought for a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act that lowers drug costs for low-income seniors.
    • He also delivered $500 million in federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program funding to help seniors with home energy costs.
  • David McCormick wants to repeal the law that is lowering drug costs for seniors.

FACT: Senator Casey is fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts. 

  • Senator Casey has worked to lower taxes on Social Security, fighting for multiple bills that would cut Social Security payroll taxes.
  • He is working to boost annual cost-of-living adjustments for those on Social Security, which will put more money in the pockets of seniors.
  • He is fighting to expand Medicare coverage to ensure that all beneficiaries have access to dental, hearing and vision care services.

FACT: David McCormick wants to put Social Security and Medicare on the chopping block. 

  • McCormick has supported putting Medicare on the chopping block.
    • McCormick: “So the path through this is […] a tightening of the belt […] And as I said, there’s entitlements and a number of other drivers of that.” [John Fredericks Radio Show, 11/16/23; 4:40]
  • McCormick said entitlements like Medicare “aren’t sustainable” and that he doesn’t think children “are going to be able to live under the same entitlements that all of us here are.”
  • McCormick advocated for privatizing Medicare as an official in the Bush administration.
    • McCormick: “…We are committed to continuing to improve our fiscal outlook, particularly through measures to address the challenge of entitlement spending reform. We have already taken steps to increase incentives for private saving through tax reforms affecting capital income, and we are striving to broaden these tax reforms to further boost personal saving.” [Heartland Signal, 5/12/22]

FACT: Senator Casey is fighting to protect seniors across Pennsylvania from scams and financial exploitation, hold long-term care facilities accountable, and provide critical services to seniors. 

  • He sponsored and passed the Fraud and Scam Reduction Act  to help combat scams and financial exploitation threatening seniors and other Pennsylvanians.
  • His bipartisan Stop Senior Scams Act, legislation that established a national advisory council to develop solutions to help prevent fraud and scams targeting seniors, was signed into law as part of the FY22 spending bill. 
  • He worked across the aisle with former Senator Toomey on a groundbreaking investigation that exposed underperforming nursing homes, bringing transparency, oversight, and accountability for Pennsylvania families seeking care for their loved ones.
