  • “[…] I think it will be close so I want to earn the votes of the people of Erie and and I think if we keep working on this I think we can win the race but it’s going to be close,” said Casey.

Tribune-Democrat: Casey touts prescription cost cap to seniors in Somerset campaign stop

  • As U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr. addressed a Somerset crowd Friday about what he said were recent victories for older Americans, he didn’t have to tell retiree Dave Bender about last year’s $35 cap on insulin […] “I’m prescribed two different kinds for my (health) issues,” Bender told The Tribune-Democrat at the Somerset Senior Center. “That makes life a lot easier. For people like me … I’m saving thousands of dollars a year.”
  • Casey said he worked across the aisle with now-retired U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., on legislation that increased oversight and accountability for underperforming nursing homes – a point that drew applause from the room.
  • But Casey said he won’t seek middle ground with any legislators who seek to privatize or weaken Medicare or Social Security – saying he’s fought such attempts before and will do so again if reelected.
  • “These are the people who built our middle class, who made us the envy of the world,” Casey said, and added that retirees deserve to benefit from [Medicare and Social Security] after spending their lives working hard. He said turning the programs over to Wall Street firms and corporate America will decimate the programs and hike household costs – “and we’re going to stop them from doing that.”

  • Anchor: “One of the issues [Casey] talked about was privatizing Social Security and making sure Medicare is not turned into a voucher program. Casey says if Medicare is turned into a voucher program, you get a finite voucher and then your health care costs are up to you after you’re done spending that voucher.”

  • Anchor: “Casey talked about how the fentanyl crisis is affecting older Americans, forcing many grandparents to suddenly become the primary caregivers for grandchildren. His solution? Stricter enforcement at the border to keep fentanyl from coming into the country and affordable treatment options for those already impacted.”
  • Casey: “Good treatment is expensive. The federal government can do more to insist that insurance companies aren’t charging so much for that kind of treatment.”
  • Anchor: “As the Chair for the Special Committee on Aging, Casey said he’s focused on passing legislation that gives middle-class Americans a tax cut, caps prescription co-pays, and keeps health care accessible.”
