LancasterOnline: ‘We are not powerless’: Sen. Bob Casey talks fighting fentanyl during Lancaster visit

  • Sen. Bob Casey delivered a hopeful message regarding the national fight against fentanyl trafficking in a Saturday visit to Lancaster city. […] Casey noted April’s passing of the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, which expands sanctions inflicted on foreign organizations and drug cartels — particularly those in Mexico and China — involved with trafficking fentanyl into the United States.
  • Casey said Congress next needs to increase funding for border patrol agent recruitment and improvements to the technology used to screen vehicles coming into the country along the southern border. DEA officials have said much of the fentanyl brought into the United States has been produced in and transported from Mexico using chemicals created by organizations in China.
  • An aspect of the crisis that Casey said is often overlooked by lawmakers is the need to improve treatment options for those who are impacted by opioid addiction. “One of the biggest problems people have is that they don’t have access to treatment because insurance doesn’t cover it,” [Casey] said. “We’ve got to change the law to make sure there aren’t any more … barriers for folks to get treatment.”
  • Yoder also took a jab at McCormick, highlighting recent allegations from Casey’s campaign that Bridgewater Associates had invested some of its earnings into one of China’s top fentanyl-producing companies while McCormick was its CEO.
